[Plugin: Google Doc Embedder] "Sorry, we are unable to retrieve the document...." (12 posts)

This looks like the perfect plugin -- if I can get it to work! I've yet to be able to see any document I upload through the plugin -- I always get the "Sorry" message.

    Here's an example: http://lettersfromleningrad.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/LFLMarina.pdf
Permissions on the upload folder are set to 777, as is the file itself.

Could it be some issue with my service provider blocking something? That happened with RSS feeds, which they promptly fixed. Maybe this, too?

    Thanks!

The issue is most likely with your provider. I used the same link on my site and the document embeds correctly. See if it looks correct on your side as well:

Let me know if I can be of any other assistance.

    Hi Kevin,

Wow, you're efficient. I'm seeing the same error on the link to your site. If it matters, I'm on MBP running Snow Leopard. Error occurs with both Firefox and Safari and using different networks to access the Internet. And really, I don't know if any of that matters!

An interesting development. I read on another site about someone having similar problems with PDF files appearing, and a guy who responded said it might be related to an old Adobe Shockwave or Flash plugin. I updated both, and now something interesting happens: I see the login for Google Docs appear on your site. When I try to login, though, I still get the same error message. Any ideas?

    Hi henigushi,

I looked at this again and I'm afraid I'm coming up short on ideas. It is working correctly for me in all the browsers I've tried (FF, IE8, Chrome, all on Windows 7).

The fact that it doesn't work across networks points to a system issue rather than a provider one, so that's helpful. The flash plugin question is a bit bizarre though, since the plugin uses Javascript only, not flash (or shockwave). I don't see how the two are related, but you did manage to make some sort of change there somehow... it's puzzling.

I wish I had other ideas for you. Maybe it's a Mac specific issue somehow?

    konstanta,

I've not been able to reproduce this particular problem in any environment on my end, and so I've not determined a fix. Let me make the following suggestions, that are the best I can offer right now. In GDE Settings, choose the "Google Standard Viewer". And under "Advanced Options" check the box to disable internal error checking.

This is the "rawest" version of the Google viewer without any attempts from my plugin to enhance it. If it doesn't work for you this way, the problem is either related specifically to the viewer itself or to your ISP or server environment, not to the plugin. If it does make it work, or gives you a different error, I would really like to hear about this.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

I keep getting the error "Sorry we are unable to retrieve your document for viewing". I have tried all the steps you listed above, but nothing seems to work.
I am still testing the site on a local server. Is it possible that this is the problem?

    tobaniyi,

Most definitely; Google's server retrieves the document to convert it for use in the viewer, so the file must be somewhere publicly available for it to load properly. (see the FAQ here on WordPress.org). Hope that helps. :)

I have the same problem, and I'm also hosted with Siteground. Permissions set to 777. I can view my file directly in Firefox (Windows 7, so it's not a Mac thing), but not through the embedded viewer. I've tried it with several files (the first one was pretty big and I thought that might be the problem. Any more ideas??

I'm getting the same error, but only when I try to load files bigger than 20M
I tried adjusting some php memory settings from the php.ini file, but I did not get any solution. Mabe it's a JavaScript configuration issue. Is there any JavaScript.ini file or something?
