    Hi there! Sorry for the delay!
    The background is always child theme dependent – so some rules have to be set to not display it in this widget only.
    With tools like firebug just get the special ID/instance of that widget and then apply something like background: 0 none; to it.
    I couldn’t see the menu icons anymore but I could find out the rules for you if you’re still interested.

    I like the plugin. Very elegant.

    I will check out your suggested solution. For the moment I have just put the display in a sidebar widget so there is no problem. By the way, glad you included Google+ 🙂
