   Is there a simple way to use custom thumbnail images (rather than those uploaded via the product pages) per product? They would need to be displayed in the cart/checkout/receipt and emails.

   I don't quite follow. Are you wanting to change the product thumbnail image to something else entirely? You could use javascript to change the image on the page. Just make sure to change the value AND name (signed with the get_verification_code() function) to make sure the new value will pass verification.
