   what is the most recent and suitable plugin for upcoming events for wordpress 3.0 and higher?

   i used to work with event calendar (http://wpcal.firetree.net/) but they stopped further development of the plugin.

   Does WordPress have any plans to incorporate this into the default installation for future releases?

   Try the My Calendar plugin, it is actively maintained and works well with the latest version of WordPress.

   Maybe someday there will be an official or "core" plugin for events, but I'm sure it'll never be in the WordPress core.
