I can't get the '6' value to change in the captcha input width, assume theme is overriding. But entering a width in the input fields' CSS as advised in FAQ's affects all input fields, resulting in either a captcha far too long for the 4 character input or other fields too short. Is there a file I can edit to affect only the captcha field?

This was the closest thing to "reset styles" I could find:
Reset the styles to labels on top (default).
I did the reset, thanks.

Doug,
I just added a new setting:
"CSS style for CAPTCHA input field on the contact form"
This has a width:50px; that should make it do what you want.
update to the latest trunk version and it should be fixed.

PS you can make an "I agree to terms" check box, check "Required field", and "Default option" 1
Then you can go back to the normal submit button.
