[Plugin: Events Calendar] Add 'Next Upcoming Event' in sidebar without widget

Hello – I am trying to add the next upcoming event from my events calendar into my sidebar. I am not using a sidebar widget.
I just want to add the date and title of the next one event with a link through to the information about the event.
Can anyone help as I cannot seem to get this to work!
