My source code - in the backend (html of wysiwyg) and source code of the output page are identical - shouldn't I see the standard hex fomatting? The plugin is installed and activated - not sure here...running WordPress 3.2.1

Which browser is used won't make a difference. Are you using Firebug to see the source code?
