[resolved] Excerpts Wrong (6 posts)

    The new version appears to ignore hand-edited excerpts, and creates it's own from the beginning of the article. Is there a setting to avoid this?

    Loving random sort BTW!

    I made this change because the excerpt option was breaking the evaluation of shortcodes on individual posts.

    I did trouble shoot this as far as I could and found that it all came down to the core WP function get_the_excerpt(). Whenever I called this function on a related post within a post's content it would break the evaluation of shortcodes like [caption]. The related posts and their excerpts would come out fine but any pictures in the post content would have the ugly [caption] code wrapped around them instead of the pretty box with the formatted caption under the picture.

    I could not find the cause of this problem within the core WP function, nor any other may to safely retrieve the excerpt. So, I wrote my own excerpt parser to take it place, and although it is not a true excerpt (only a trimmed and filtered content segment) it does a fair job and doesn't cause any other content disruption.

    If you (or anyone else) can help me determine the cause of the get_the_excerpt bug, or another way to safely retrieve the excerpt, please feel free to post your findings here.

    Aloha, Eli

    I've rolled back to regain them. Is it possible to reintroduce the random sort order to v1.2.03.04, even if it was hard-coded?

    It would be a lot easier to go back to 1.2.03.14 and use the get_the_excerpt function in place of my work-around code but I'm warning you there is a problem with get_the_excerpt() and it may mean that your other shortcodes in your posts don't work.

    leaving it at version 1.2.03.04 will have the same effect on your captions.

    I you want to go back to 1.2.03.14 and use the standard excerpt code then you just have to replace line 298:
    return '<br />'.$the_excerpt;
    with:
    return '<br />'.get_the_excerpt();

    If you are not experiencing the bug of the get_the_excerpt() function breaking your caption code I would very much like to take a closer look at your site.

    Could you please tell me what site you are using my plugin on?

    If you don't want to post it here you can email me directly at:

    Thanks, Eli

    I added back standard excerpt support using get_the_excerpt() in the widget and use of custom excerpts if entered. Try it out and let me know if that works for you.
