   Just to confirm, does an SSL certificate need to be purchased and installed in order to sell digital downloads on my site?

   If you are using the default PayPal Standard payment gateway, no, you do not need an SSL certificate.

   If you choose to purchase one of the add-on gateways, such as Stripe or any of the other gateways that directly process credit cards, then yes, you should have an SSL certificate.
