Because if you deactivate it (for example for update to WordPress 3.0 it is obligatory to deactivate all plugins!) the settings of this plugin are all killed!

It didn't kill mine. It *did* deactivate the spam filter. When I started getting spam from the contact form, I went back in and re-activated and all was well.
