Hi, I am using this great plugin since a year and it works perfectly till now, but recently I had added few custom taxonomies manually by adding codes into the theme’s functions file for better classification of posts but unfortunately, it seems plugin doesn’t supports custom taxonomies.

For eg. here is a link to a custom taxonomies http://www.mrpinindia.in/mobilegsm/dual-sim/ it classifies all products under dual SIM category but, as you can see all of the widgets are appearing on the sidebar and I’ve no control over it because the selected taxonomies is not visible on the individual widget configuration page.

Please help me out over this issue.

    Regards,
    Pranjal

I’m sorry, Custom Taxonomies are only supported within DW for Custom Post Types and Static pages.

Hi, thanks for your reply but do you’ve plans to include such support in the near future or in the upcoming update? 🙂

I won’t see this coming soon to DW. Mostly because of the reason there are ‘good old’ tags for posts which are supported by DW.

I actually don’t see the difference between tags and taxonomies except for taxonomies having the ability of hierarchical structuring. You probably have (many) good reasons to use taxonomies above tags. The stories I have read so far didn’t convince me of a huge difference. Can you point me out to some article or maybe yourself describing the (huge) benefit above tags? It might help getting this on the roadmap. 😉

Yeah! of course, hierarchical structuring is a plus but, why I am using taxonomies is because selecting categories is pretty much easier if you’re using them as the primary way to filter your posts. Suppose in case of mine, I need to classify a product within multiple formats like in case of tablets PCs, what’s the screen size? so i quickly check the appropriate variation from the already given size, without searching for the exact tag from the box. So, this way I add around 5-6 filter for a product like OS version, Brand, price range, features and storage capacity. And using custom taxonomies makes it easier with just see the appropriate value and check it.

While for the tags, it’s quiet time consuming for such classification of a product as I need to search again and again for exact tag values assigned for specific groups. And the worst thing about tags, is that by mistakenly you add a miss-spelled the exact classification term then WordPress creates additional tag, which is completely waste and you also need to delete it from the edit tag area. Hope I didn’t messed you much with my words but, this is why I am using Custom taxonomies over tags.

And yeah, I wish you should include the support for custom taxonomies in the future. 🙂

I also would need support for custom taxonomies. We always create Custom Taxonomies with Custom Post Types for the websites we build for clients. This allows us to create product catalogs and such using a number of different categorization techniques.

    Hello Jean-Francois,

Custom Taxonomies is supported for Custom Post Types and Pages in DW. Not for Posts (yet).
