I tried to auto install but errors ensued so I went manual ftp. Has the spinning arrow been taken away? It doesn't show but email gets sent? Not good for the user. Also required fields are no longer outlined...I don't know what's going on but if this is the new version I'll stick with the old. Is it supposed to work this way? Please advise.

It seems to me that the mentioned problem could be due to the same problem described here. I tried to give some explanations there also; at least what I've found out today when fixing my troubles with contact form 7 version 1.10.
