    Edit CSS stylesheet in your theme to decrease margin/padding around the entry fields.

    If I edit the stylesheet for the theme, won’t those changes be erased the next time I update my theme? would it be better to make the change in my child theme? If that’s the case, what would I put in the child theme?

    Yes, you should make the change in the child theme if it will be updated less often or you can control its update.
