I'm unable to use inline checkboxes because each box sits in the centre of a width equal to the default text box. Maybe this is something defined in my theme (which is Thesis) but I've looked and cannot find the relevant code. Can anyone help? Even when I add the css to present the items in a vertical block, the checkboxes still sit in the middle of a textbox-sized space.

Try using Firefox with the Firebug add-on for this kind of CSS work.

Thanks--I have used it, but not that much. I'll review the form in ff and see if that helps. The thing is, I'm not sure this IS a css issue.
I can assure you that it is a theme issue.
