I tried the widget and wanted to see what an error message looked like so I just clicked Submit without filling in any of the required fields - it showed a message that I successfully subscribed. Nothing was filled in at all, and nothing showed up in the contacts list (like an empty first and last name and email field for instance) so nothing happened, yet it says that I subscribed anyway and never showed any errors or warnings saying that those fields are required.
