Plugin conflict with Version 1.4.24?

For the past 2 weeks the WordPress dashboard has been sluggish: it is slow to the point I cannot use it. Navigating from one tab to another is difficult, if not impossible. Trying to edit a post is not possible either: the “edit” page for any given post will take forever to load, and often will not succeed in loading completely.
I’ve already cleared my hosting provider, with whom I had several exchange.
What I have found, so far, is that if I want to edit a post, I need first to deactivate the WordPress SEO plugin. As soon as the plugin is deactivated, I can edit my posts as usual. Once the desired edits are done, I re-activate the plugin. I have come to this solution upon observing that on the edit page of a given post, the plugin’s custom fields failed to load: those are the one that appeared to take forever to load.
Is this a known issue? Anything else I can do to troubleshoot the problem?
