[resolved] Display Random Sticky On Page Reload (4 posts)

Hi, I know I've just submitted another post however this is not related so I've put it in it's own topic.

At the moment, I've styled all the directory and it looks really good, I do want to offer sticky listings for a fee, however when I make two or more sticky listings, it 'clogs' up the page and takes up too much room. I'm potentially listing thousands of companies and so with perhaps 10% of these companies purchasing sticky listings, I need to control the page to avoid having 200 sticky listings before the actual directory appears.

Is there any possible way to display only one or two random sticky posts on every page refresh?

I am also considering an affiliate ad system but I still want to allow companies to advertise solely for the directory.

Any advice would be great, I can provide pictures if that helps.

    Thanks :)

    Hi DannyCare,

Hmmm. I hear what you're saying. The sticky listings can take over at that directory size. But having "one or two" show up, while all others don't could be technically difficult, not to mention the backlash from the users who paid to upgrade? (For example, what if the post they paid for never shows up after 10+ refreshes on a page? Wouldn't you be mad at that point?)

Perhaps we need to think of another way to display the featured listings--a widget, a slider, something.

    Hi, thanks for the response!

At the moment the website is still under development and so nobody has paid for a sticky listing. Saying this however, I agree with you and looking at the website as a viewer, I want the directory to be right in front of me instead of having to scroll through even two sticky listings.

Widget is a great idea, as is the slider! The slider more so. You'd perhaps have to set it to load the sticky loop listings in a random order every page load to make it fairer on those who have paid, especially when you're on about 100 stickies - Same thing goes for the widget.

For the widget you could choose to load, say, 15 listings on the sidebar which are about 20px high each per listing. This loop displays random listings on every page load, then the user would have to refresh the page 5-6 times maximum for their listing to appear!

Also, I was going to ask whilst you are available - Is there any way that we can add the sticky listing onto the fees page? At the moment it's set up on my website so that the user pays £3 for an extra 4 images on their listing, and then when they make their listing they have to click upgrade. - I still want that upgrade feature there however to add a tick box on the add listing page would be a great way to upsell.

You can take a sneak look at the website here: http://www.radthreads.co.uk

    Thanks for your continued support!

    Hi DannyCare,

Adding the sticky listing option to the fees page is a great idea. We'll put that on the list to do. I have a bunch of things for the next release so we'll see if we can make it happen or not.
