I finally got a grip on creating category template files within WordPress.
Can you not do the same thing when BuddyPress is being used?
I'm using a modified version of the BP theme "FakeName". When the site I am working on was a flat WP site I had a file named 'category-scholarships-grants.php'. Worked fine.
Created a similar file and put it in the child theme directory... and nothing.
Did you also create the scholarships-grants category in your new install?

I... didn't do a new install (?) of the site. I installed BuddyPress. The category is still there.
The template file did not work within the BuddyPress theme like it did for the site using 2010 theme (non-buddypress).

Here is the link to the site in question: http://www.ratest3.com/category/scholarships-grants/
But it is NOT using the template file even though it is up on the server: http://www.ratest3.com/wp-content/themes/bp-fakename/catetory-scholarships-grants.php
Here is the BP version I can't get to work:

Based on the WP version I did get to work:
