    Is there a way to edit the members list widget so it doesn't show the active hours and minutes area and to make it use up less horizontal space? I'd like my lists to be tight so more members show with less page depth.

    Easy and fast: add display:none to the element in stylesheet. :

    div.widget #members-list span.activity {
         display: none;
    }

    The style.css file is not editable, or at least it appears that way in the buddypress theme. Says I need to go to a codex page to create a custom child theme. Are you referring to a different .css file?

    After you create the child theme, you have to activate it in Appearance > Themes. Add the style I posted above to the child theme's style.css file.
