I am using this particular code
[autonav display=images postid="category:apples" order="DESC" ]
Unsuccessfully.
I've tried the postid with a cat number instead, but it spit me out a list of every image in my media library (?!). I don't know if it matters, but in this context, my category has a parent. does it?
I'm using this, successfully, with custom meta tags on pages so I thought it should carry over to posts easy-peasy but that has proven to not be the case.
Your shortcode invocation should work...
Could you try the v1.4.5 beta, please? Rename your existing autonav directory under wp-content/plugins and extract the zipfile into a new autonav directory.

I apologise for the delay in my response. This is still unresolved-- where can I find the beta version?
NVM- I found it. It is still not working, I get an empty display when I try it. I tried various combinations of ways to bring it up.
