[resolved] [Plugin: Automatic Updater] Doesn't update to beta (7 posts)

As I mentioned earlier, I was curious how updating to the next beta version would work. Now that beta2 is out, it doesn't update.

I have set the beta tester plugin to "Bleeding edge nightlies", which would upgrade to the next beta if I did the manual upgrade.
Is this a function which doesn't work with the WP Beta Tester plugin, or is there something else which doesn't work correctly.

Thanks for the feedback! I was waiting for beta2 to land so I could test this, I'll investigate and see what's happening.

There seems to be something weird going on with the Beta Tester plugin, it isn't finding the 3.5 betas. Ie:

    http://wordpress.org/support/topic/plugin-wordpress-beta-tester-i-use-342-but-cannot-upgrade-to-35-beta

Similarly, when I use it on 3.5b1, it's not finding 3.5b2, only the nightlies.

I'll have a chat to @westi and see what's going on.

This is a bug and I'm looking into it.

Similarly, when I use it on 3.5b1, it's not finding 3.5b2, only the nightlies.

We don't support just installing Betas at the moment.

The Beta Tester plugin just helps you switch from a release install to a development stream for nightly builds - we actually want people upgrading to each nightly between betas (and RCs) so that we don't get duplicate bug reports etc.

Yeah, I had a chat to @dd32 about this, he was saying the same thing.

I'm going to configure Automatic Updater to install nightlies every 24 hours if they're available, so folks stay up to date.

I usually only use the nightly builds option when there are new beta/RC releases, as alpha is a bit to experimental for my tastes.
But I'd switch over to the nightlies when they're automatically updating to the builds in between the beta's and RCs.

    @Westi
With a name like Beta Tester, it does sound like it is meant for testing beta/RC releases. And I would expect the option to just update to those releases.
I was wondering about that earlier, but your explanation sounds logical.

    Hey Tristan,

So, here's how it will all work:

As @westi said, when you use Beta Tester, it will switch you over to the nightly builds. You currently have the option of using the 3.4.x nightly builds, or the 3.5 nightly builds. I agree that we shouldn't be only upgrading between each Beta release - this will only produce outdated or duplicate bug reports. The nightly builds are reasonably stable once we get to beta phase, there are rarely any massive changes site-breaking changes occurring at this stage.

So, Automatic Updater will do the following, if you're on a nightly stream:
    - Every 24 hours, it will install the latest nightly of the stream you're currently on.
    - When the stable version of that stream is released, it will download and install it as part of the nightly process.
    - If you still have Beta Tester activated, it will continue to install updates from that stream.
    - If Beta Tester is deactivated, it will go back to only installing stable updates again, until you reactivate Beta Tester again.

I've committed this, I'll be releasing Automatic Updater 0.6 shortly.
