I love Audio Player … great way for me to post daily podcasts. Recently I received an email from someone who is legally blind. She uses screen reading software. She said that she has trouble “accessing graphical buttons” like the “play” button referred to in my blog posts when a new podcast episode is available (example).

I’m wondering if you know of anything I can do to make the Audio Player more accessible to folks like my visitor. Is there any tagging I can do or something? I would be most grateful for your help.

I am not familiar with accessibility standards for website, but I am going to start looking in to them today.

  • I noticed you already have a ‘no-flash’ content that (if flash is present) is replaced by the playing applet.

Here’s an idea: Put your “click here to download the file” in that tag, this will nicely fall back on screen-reader software as they don’t have flash.

I need to warn you, flash and accessibility don’t mix well. I was hoping for HTML5 to pick that up, but the codec support is a train wreck (no single codec across 4 major browsers).

    Hope this helps,

    grok
