When I type [/reveal] in my visual content editor, the output is <p>[/reveal]</p>, essentially making the tag ineffective and the entire post becomes wrapped in the [reveal] tag.

Are you put a carriage return before putting the end tag? If it's placed on the end of the line your editor shouldn't wrap the paragraph tags around it.
