So WP1.2 won't be out till mid-week, but could any of the devs shed some light on how the plugins architecture works? The Wiki pages are a little sparse. I've got down how to write the comments at the beginning to identify it and such, but what about filters, hooks, and triggers (for example, when a post is published, is there a filter I could use?) Thanks for any and all info!

I'm intending to try to take a crack at some of that later on in the week. Once I'm done with all my class stuff. For now... it's pretty well just browsing through source. :-(

You can try the latest release candidate of WP. It's stable as far as my usage is concerned. You can see how plugins are integrated with the administration. Pretty simple but efficient.
