This plugin works on 2.8.4 perfectly for me. The recent updates are outstanding and the support on the author's website is great.
I thoroughly recommend this plugin to anyone wanting a complete classifieds plugin.

A couple of questions for you please...
1) I saw you're also using the content-slide PI on the byfordwa site. Is it the one by Neel? If not which PI did you use? and which (level) index.php file did you modify so that the slides category is not displayed?
2) I'm nervous about corrupting the WP DB. I am backing up the MySQL DB weekly but don't know how to determine if a DB has been corrupted or how to recover it. I'm not really too technical.
