And The Winner Is...
Not counting all comments (7 posts)

    Hi there,

I have noticed once again that the And The Winner Is Plugin is not counting all of the comments. I have a post with 18 comments. And the winner is says there are only 7. The post is http://littletechgirl.com/2010/11/08/the-robot-book-review-giveaway/

I use Disqus comments. Is that why?

    Thanks!

Hey, the plugin counts all comments in the WP db that aren't trackbacks. As long as Disqus is set to keep it's comments synced with WP, it should work. But you're the second person since the plugins release to mention that there's a comment counting problem, so I'd like to talk offline to get a few more details and try to reproduce this so I can fix it.

    Does that sound doable?

Sure thing. I have actually noticed this on a couple of other posts as well. Feel free to email me at kcain at littletechgirl.com.

    Thanks!

I'm ready to start using this for a big giveaway - has this issue with miscounting been rectified?

I hope to have a chance to look into this tomorrow and have an update out by this weekend. The OP has sent me some great test cases. Thanks for that!

    Spencer, any updates here?

I'm using IntenseDebate for commenting on a website. IntenseDebate does sync comments from their database to my WordPress database, so I think this plugin should work OK with IntenseDebate (so ignore my @ tweet to you).

    Thanks Spencer!!

After talking offline with the OP, it seems Disqus was not syncing all comments in a timely fashion. Since the plugin can only deal with comments in the WP database, it was not finding those comments Disqus didn't sync. My understanding is that she has since stopped using Disqus for other reasons and this plugin is now working as expected.

So, I think the core issue is to make sure that if you're using a third party commenting system that it does sync all of your comments back to the WP database in a timely fashion.

If I am incorrect about the resolution, littletechgirl, please let me know.
