Is there a way to query events like you can with a post from specific categories?

like,

<?php $recent->query('event_category=5&showposts=2');?>

If so I would LOVE to know how as I have been looking for a calendar that does this effectively for awhile..

You can do it using plugin’s API. Here is an example:
