Is there a similar plugin for adding links to media files?
Current workflow from wordpress documentation (using the star-burst icon above the post editor) just adds the image to my post. Not as described.
I'd appreciate anyone knows one let me know.

The star-burst add media button adds media in the most appropriate way: Browsers know what to do with images, so it displays the image with an option to link that image with the actual file; other files, that a browser might not know how to handle, are simply linked to.
What exactly are you looking for? A normal text link to your image?
