    I make no claim that my solution is a “good” one. But make this change at line 388 of the abooze-home-slider.php

    ul#slideShowCount li.slide{
    display:none;
    /*

    display: block;
    float: right;
    height: 25px;
    line-height: 22px;
    position: relative;
    width: 26px;
    */
    }

    As for your second question. Make sure the ASPECT RATIO of your images matches his dimensions of 900 x 450
