Plug-Ins not transferring to website (8 posts)

After searching these forums, I've found similiar problems to mine, but nothing I've tried has resolved this problem. I'm a new WordPress user and still quite a novice to website building, so I'd greatly appreciate detailed help.

I tried installing the 'Share-This' plug in and realized it didn't show on the admin panel. I changed permissions, read the 'read me' files and tried again with no luck. Now the Akismet spam protector has even been removed from the plug in directory (Akismet came pre-installed.) I'm guessing I accidentally took it off somehow. I can't get the Akismet to show now either.

The FTP program (Filezilla) shows that the plug ins are installed, but they are still not showing up on the admin panel.

Now, when I try to change the permissions on the plug ins, they automatically go right back to the default. Does every plug in need permissions changed, or just certain ones?

Any idea of what I did to mess this up so bad?? What can I do to fix it? Thanks!

If you can't change permissions (see Changing File Permissions) you may need to talk with your host about making sure you have the necessary ownership for those folders/files.

Folder wp-content should be 777 permissions.

I changed the permissions on wp-content. I tried sending the Akismet plug in again, and it still shows that it transferred, but is still not showing up on my WordPress plug in panel.

I don't think my problem is so much that I can't change the permissions but that WordPress isn't showing my transferred files.

Also, in my FTP, what does a "?" on the folders mean?

If WordPress doesn't show them, then either it doesn't see them due to permissions, or you didn't transfer them properly.

    Whooami-
Your tutorial was really well made- thank you. However, when you explained the two different ways of unzipping the files I got confused. My computer has a program already installed to unzip the files. If I simply right click on the zipped file and then choose 'extract files' then upload via FTP the unzipped files- will that create a nested directory?

I did download a free trial of Winzip and tried using that program, but it still made no difference. It's possible that I'm just not understanding the steps needed in unzipping a file correctly- I think I'm doing it right, but after watching your tutorial, maybe I'm not!

it doesnt matter what you use to unzip the files. Its the end result that is important. I showed 2 ways, one which results in there not being nested folders, one where there are.

Ultimately, it doesnt matter how you unpack a zip, what matters is that you do not end up having uploaded nested folders.

If I simply right click on the zipped file and then choose 'extract files' then upload via FTP the unzipped files- will that create a nested directory?

Lets put on our collective thinking cap. Is there some reason why you can look at what you unpacked, either before you upload, or as you upload? Every FTP client out there, allows you to navigate within the windows file system.

Instead of assuming that what you are uploading is unpacked the way it needs to be uploaded, why NOT just look first??

99.9999999999999% of problems on this forum are due to ppl not looking at what they are doing. Why do we insist on turning off our brains??? :(

I HAVE looked at what I've unpacked and it doesn't appear to be nested. I've done everything you've suggested in your tutorial and it's STILL not being read by wordpress. Filezilla shows that the file transfer was successful, but wordpress doesn't see it for some reason.
Is it possible that my problem may be with my server?

My brain is fried from trying to figure this out. Unfortunatly, I am not as literate with website building and wordpress as you and others are- that's why I'm seeking you all for help.
