    Hello all members,

    I am working with the webpages for a Swedish society in Tokyo. The site is not originally designed by me. We have recently agreed to change the previous first page into a wordpressblog and to keep every thing else as it is. The criteria is that we should not change the design.

    I have now installed wordpress and I have studied all the settings, themes, possibility to change the code and so on. I have quickly realised that my html knowledge from 1995 is not so much worth any longer.

    So now I ask the communicate here:

    If you had the following page: http://www.ycn.net

    and had to make a wordpressblog from that style (header picture with Javascript, colours and fonts), where would you start.

    Please give me a hint:

    1) Which Theme would you start from

    2) Where to change the header for this theme. How to get my Javascript to work.

    3) Where to change the colours and fonts. I guess this is really simple.

    4) If possible (I really do not know if it is) the drag and drop functions for widgets to the frame should still be working.

    I am sorry for this but I was really stuck in knowwhere last night (live in Tokyo) and didn`t get anywhere. As soon as I get this boring design/theme in order I am sure I will be a killer implementing col widgets and stuff.

    Best Regards,
    Daniel Andersson

    BTW Loves open source. Since a month struggling with Ubuntu, really fun.

    1. I'd start looking at http://themes.wordpress.net/ and find a theme that's similar, if that's what you want.

    2. The header is usually in header.php, which is where you'd also put your javascript. http://codex.wordpress.org/Stepping_Into_Templates will probably be helpful.

    3. style.css, which is in the theme directory.

    4. I know nothing about widgets, I'm afraid.

    I hope this gets you started.

    Thanks for your kind reply. I will start with finding a template and try to get te header to work. I will read the guide you recommended.

    I will come back later when I have specific questions.

    Alright. I am stuck already.

    All templates which resembles the page I should copy seems to have the header image in the style.ccs file rather than in the header.php. This confuses me a lot and I do not know how to input my javascript based header picture instead of a normal pic.

    So could some one please guide me how to input the headerjavascript in this page http://www.ycn.net into a kubric-based theme.

    The Javascript are two blocks on a normal page:

    Before <body>:
    <script src="Scripts/AC_RunActiveContent.js" type="text/javascript"></script>

    After <body>:
    <script type="text/javascript">
    AC_FL_RunContent( 'codebase','http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,29,0','width','760','height','110','src','flash/topflash','quality','high','pluginspage','http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer','movie','flash/topflash' ); //end AC code
    </script><noscript><object
    classid="clsid:D27CDB6E-AE6D-11cf-96B8-444553540000"
    codebase="http://download.macromedia.com/pub/shockwave/cabs/flash/swflash.cab#version=6,0,29,0"
    width="760" height="110"> <param name="movie"
    value="flash/topflash.swf" /> <param name="quality" value="high" />
    <embed src="flash/topflash.swf" quality="high"
    pluginspage="http://www.macromedia.com/go/getflashplayer"
    type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="760" height="110"></embed>
    </object></noscript>

    Thanks in advance,

    Daniel

    Oh, no.
    Forget Kubrick - it is one of the most difficult themes to modify, especially for beginners. Let's find a simple, easy to modify basic theme.

    e.g.
    http://themes.wordpress.net/other/right-sidebar/11/clean-bleu-10/

    To get a basic understanding how the theme system works - imagine that your existing index file was cut/sliced in pieces. See a visual representation of it here.

    You don't need to start with the header image :)
    Get all the rest working - i.e. make your existing index a php file and start putting into it the Wp template tags that would display (later) the content.
    Besides what has been give above, this is also a good resource for starter: http://codex.wordpress.org/Theme_Development

    Moshu's right -- Kubrick is a pain to modify.

    You can take any theme and completely rewrite the header file. You can remove the header image from the css and put the image and script in the header file just as you have it on your current site. If you can do it on a static page you can do it on WordPress.

    Seems like everybody agree Kubrik is a pain but when I have searched for templates (with widget supoport) they always seem to be of Kubrik style.

    Are there any non-kubrik (with header pic in the actual header) which support widgets at all?

    The blue-theme which some nice person asked me to use is not widget supported.

    I thought the whole idea to easy be able to manage add ons is that it has to widget supported?

    Anyway, I am really down rigth now and everythings feels difficult. I know once the basic design is set, the rest is going to be fun,

    Basically i need a site with
    - One right sidebar
    - header picture java script
    - I have a background pic (I already got this to work)
    - Content, sidebar and footer shall be white
    - CHange font and font colour
    - Widget support

    Should I pay someone to make this theme for me, maybe the easiest. Is 50 dollar enough?

    The copy should be from YCN.net

    What should I do?

    You can just take a deep breath and don't get discouraged :)
    If you understand basic HTML and CSS you will get it. Don't get stuck on small details, like widgets. Any theme can be made "widget ready" in about 5-10 minutes!
    If you have a JS gizmo for the header... so be it, you will copy/paste that part of the code and you are done.

    On the other hand, I know not everybody is interested in learning the details to make a WP theme. They always can find pros who would do it for them. (usually, the prices are a bit higher than you suggested above...)

    You can ask for paid help: start a new thread, say what you want and leave a contact address. Those interested can contact you in private; no bidding is allowed in the forum!

    I understand, at the beginning it is overwheling, a lot of new info to digest, lot of documentation to read etc. But sometimes the challenge is tempting :)

    Thanks for the post. It feels much better reading those calming words. I guess once I get going I will probably we able to do this by my self , then.

    I`ll go out and have some beers with friends and try again tomorrow.

    Anyway, just because this is php. Is there no tool which can help me editing my theme?
