Please help me, an idiot. wp-login.php (7 posts)

    I was trying to follow these directions listed at http://codex.wordpress.org/Login_Trouble which says:

    Changed your WordPress address URI and cannot login nor access the database (but still can access the login page) ?

    wp-login.php can be used to reset the address:

    //FIXME: do comment/remove these hack lines. (once the database is updated)
    update_option('siteurl', 'http://your.domain.name/the/path' );
    update_option('home', 'http://your.domain.name/the/path' );

    I did this, not even changing the your.domin.name part before uploading it. Now the website at bellishlimited.com is pretty messed up. I tried removing the code, and that didn't work. Then I tried having the code in except using http://bellishlimited.com instead of your.domain.name/the/path but still no luck.

    I know, I'm dumb. But what can I do to save the poor person who trusted me to get this done?

  2. You're not dumb at all, take a deep breath. :)

    You've messed up your site URL so give this a look.

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL

    Personally I prefer the modifying your theme's functions.php file solution myself.

    http://codex.wordpress.org/Changing_The_Site_URL#Edit_functions.php

    Using FTP or whatever file management tool your host provides you with make a backup copy of this file wp-content/themes/bellish/functions.php and save that somewhere safe.

    Now edit that file (keep that backup copy safe) and make the top of it look like this:

    <?php
    update_option('siteurl','http://bellishlimited.com');
    update_option('home','http://bellishlimited.com');

    Once that's done visit this URL http://bellishlimited.com/ and see what happens.

    That ought to fix it. If it does then put that backup copy of wp-content/themes/bellish/functions.php back where you found it.

    If it doesn't then let us know.

    Thanks Jan and govpatel.

    I am still having trouble.

    Jan - I believe that might help me change the URL structure how I need it once I fix another issue on my site where I manually added http://your.domain.name/the/path

    govpatel - Thanks. I thought I removed it from wp-login.php and don't see it anymore, but it hasn't changed. I don't see it anywhere.

  5. Well first fix the URL. That can get you back to square one at least.

    When you try to log into your WordPress via http://bellishlimited.com/wp-login.php do you get an error message or a white blank screen?

    Right now when I go to http://bellishlimited.com/wp-login.php I get a white blank screen. As far as the URL, I think I removed it from wp-login.php

    As far as I remember, the steps I took were I added this code:

    <?php
    update_option('siteurl','http://bellishlimited.com');
    update_option('home','http://bellishlimited.com');

    to wp-login.php and the site messed up. Then I removed the code, and it still isn't working and has kept that structure. I know I must be missing something, but I just don't know.

    Looks like you have succeeded in changing urls as I can open your site fine and your login page is working fine as well
