I know the installation steps, but I have no idea what they mean. I'm new to all of this. Can someone please help me with a simple step-by-step?

    1. Deactivate plugin if you have the previous version installed.
    understood

    2. Extract "user-role-editor.zip" archive content to the "/wp-content/plugins/user-role-editor" directory.
    no idea what this means

    3. Activate "User Role Editor" plugin via 'Plugins' menu in WordPress admin menu.
I might be able to figure this out

    4. Go to the "Users"-"User Role Editor" menu item and change your WordPress standard roles capabilities according to your needs.
    understood

This instruction is for manual plugin installation. WordPress can do it for you automatically:
    1. Go to "Plugins=>Add New" menu.
    2. Input "User Role Editor" into input text box. Press Search Plugins.
    3. Click "Install Now" link under the plugin name.
    4. Click "Activate"
Look this support video on the subject

Thanks. I got it installed. I see the list of capabilities, but it looks complicated. Can you tell me what button to click on, to give a contributor the ability to add media to their post?

Add 'upload_files' capability to the Contributor role.

Thanks for all your help. I got it up and running perfectly.

Can you help me with something unrelated? When I click on my header image, it takes me to the front page of my site. Can I change that to send people to a different url?

I assume it's done in header.php, but I don't know how. Is this where?

    <title><?php wp_title( '|', true, 'right' ); ?></title>
    <link rel="pingback" href="<?php bloginfo('pingback_url'); ?>" />
