    Hi Everyone,

I have a problem, of my own making I must admit.

I have a custom installation of wordpress that was running a very old version of WP, as far as I remember it was 2.0.3. I put off upgrading as long as possible, but last night finally bit the bullet.

I copied the upgrade script across, and it it ran and i had to copy some files back. Now it was giving DB errors because it upgraded the DB to latest version.

I do have a copy of the old blog files, but not the DB (Part of the reason of upgrading was to install the automated backup for the sql data)

I think the install is pretty much trashed, which is very unfortunate because I paid the designer a lot.

So can I start the design of the theme again and just overlay the theme onto the blog data sql ? If so what is the best way to go about it ?

    Many thanks!

Number one rule of upgrading any script; backup files AND databases.

I know it doesn't help in this instance, but backing up will prevent headaches in the future.

When you say you had a custom installation do you mean you modified core files or installed plugins?

FTP the theme over to the new install and it should work ok. Some things may need to be tweaked in the theme due to the upgrade though.

Perhaps post the DB errors to give us an idea of what needs fixing...

    All may not be lost.

It may be a host of plugin related issues that area manifesting as db issues.

Take an sql backup of your db as it is now, even if you think it's trashed.

How far do you think it got in the upgrade and why?

Clarify the drama surrounding 'moving some files back'...

right ok. I did a sensible thing and did a backup of the sql data, and then restored the old 2.0.3 over the top. It now works for the most part.

As for custom, only custom as in the sense the design is based off of red china and modified to suit the purpose, by the designer, not me.

    All the plugins are disabled.

The only problem as far as data seems to be :

The categories give this error (sql statement)

WordPress database error: [Unknown column 'my_cat_order' in 'order clause']
    SELECT DISTINCT link_category, cat_name, show_images, show_description, show_rating, show_updated, sort_order, sort_desc, list_limit FROM wp_links LEFT JOIN wp_linkcategories ON (link_category = cat_id) WHERE link_visible = 'Y' AND list_limit <> 0 ORDER BY my_cat_order

    Also my links have disappeared.

I suspect this is to do with the fact that the code is 2.0.3. So I think now I need to update to latest release as the core db tables seem to have changed.

So how do I do this, step by step idiot style?

    Thanks

    Hi peeps,

Got it all working. Once it was kind of ok I CAREFULLY re read the upgrade instructions and it seemed to go ok except I couldn't login. The fix was sorted by manually editing the table in mysql. Then when I tried to login again, it prompted for an upgrade. So now its all good!

Thank you for everyone for the help (and yes auto backup is now on for SQL too!)

    Ta
