   I recently insstalled this theme, but when I view it the actual website is only about 40 percent of the width of the background. So, in other words, it shows as one big column on the background but only about 40 percent of the width of the background. This can't be right. How do I make it wider. Thanks in advance.

   depends on how wide your background is, this can be right.

   most flexible themes have a max-width somewhere in the stylesheets, which often also depends on the selected theme options.

   How do I make it wider

   try to work with a browser inspection tool such as Firebug http://getfirebug.com/ to identify which style is restricting the width, and edit it.
