Support » Theme: Pilcrow » Pilcrow theme suddenly not displaying featured header images in posts

Just within the last few days, my featured header images on specific posts have all stopped displaying. They show as featured images in edit mode and they’re all sized at 990X257, which is the right size. far as I know. I disabled all plug ins and that didn’t make any difference. Any idea how to fix this? The posts in question were all written for the A-Z Challenge in April. Here’s an example:

    Thanks in advance.

Hi Debbie, here are some troubleshooting ideas:

    1)

Just within the last few days, my featured header images on specific posts have all stopped displaying.

Have you made any changes to your site in the last few days? If so, try undoing those changes to see if it solves the issue.

    2) Are you using a child theme? If so, try activating the parent theme temporarily to see if the per-post headers come back.

    3) Are you using any custom CSS? Try removing it temporarily.

    4) Try creating one test post or page with the same featured image as one of the posts where it’s missing to rule out an issue with the image itself or with the specific posts where they stopped displaying. In the test post or page, just put a simple sentence in the post editor. See if the featured image shows up in the header.

Hi Kathryn; Thanks for responding. I’ve already tried 1-3 with no success and it’s affecting ALL my featured headers, so I doubt that’s the problem, but I will do a test post as you suggested and report back.

I tried 3 different featured headers in a test post and none of them displayed. They are all sized at 990X257. Is that still the correct size? Thanks again for any help.

Is that still the correct size?

It should be, as far as I know. Nothing has changed in the theme itself in a year – you can see that in the development history here where the last change to Pilcrow was 12 months ago:

    https://themes.trac.wordpress.org/log/pilcrow/

That’s why I was foscussing on changes made on your end – the theme itself hasn’t changed.

Did you upgrade your version of WordPress in the last few days?

Could you provide a link to one of your test header images so I can test it on my end?

The last WordPress update was over a month ago, I think. This just started happening a few days ago.
    Here’s a couple of examples:

Do you remember if you switched your layout recently from a 2-column layout to a 3-column layout under Appearance > Theme Options?

I’ve done some testing and was able to replicate the issue with featured images not showing up on single posts after switching to one of the 3-column layouts and have asked our developers to take a look. If you switch the layout to a 2-column layout temporarily, do your featured images reappear?

    (@debbie-doglady)

I’ve always had the same layout (content-sidebar-sidebar), but with customized widths (implemented last year) and it worked fine until the other day. I had to disable the Jetpack plugin to do it (because of the custom CSS), but yes, the image shows when I switched to sidebar-content-sidebar. Hopefully, there is a way for me to keep my layout incl. custom CSS AND featured header images! Here’s a link to the CSS style sheet, if that helps at all. I’m not exactly an expert, but everything was working fine, regardless.

I’ll keep you posted once our developers have had a chance to look at the bug report I filed. It may not be immediately as they handle bugs in order of priority. Thanks in advance for your patience.

Okay; thanks. I’ll be eagerly awaiting a solution.

    Howdy Debbie!

I’m a Theme Wrangler with Automattic, following up on this issue.

Could you try running the Regenerate Thumbnails plugin? You can download it here:
    https://wordpress.org/plugins/regenerate-thumbnails/

Running that should fix the issue and allow your featured images to display at the new, wider layout.

Let us know if you have any problems with it!

    Cheers,
    Caroline

Hi Caroline; I thought I wrote a response to this earlier, but it obviously didn’t go through. I tried that and it didn’t solve my problem. The featured header images are all properly sized to 990X257 and were working just fine until a couple of weeks ago. Suddenly, they just disappeared and were replaced by the default image. Just in the last week, I changed individual posts to full page width without the sidebar. Not sure if that makes a difference or not, but I tried your suggestion before I did that and it didn’t help.

    Thanks and regards,
    Debbie

Hi Debbie, thanks for the additional deatils.

I’d like to check a couple of things:

Just in the last week, I changed individual posts to full page width without the sidebar. Not sure if that makes a difference or not, but I tried your suggestion before I did that and it didn’t help.

Have you tried regenerating your thumbnails after applying the new page template?

After you installed the plugin, did you choose the “regenerate all images”? If you just activate the plugin but don’t take the step of running the regeneration manually, nothing actually happens to your images and they all stay the same.

    Thread Starter Debbie D.

    (@debbie-doglady)

Hi Kathryn; Yes, I repeated the entire process yesterday for all images. Sadly, it didn’t solve the problem. 🙁 Any other suggestions are most welcome.

Hi, I’m chiming in to see if I can help. First, I wanted to note that I did test this several times on a few different WordPress installs, and I found that the advice to use the regenerate thumbnails plugin after changing the layout worked every time. In my tests, I used WordPress 3.9.2 and Pilcrow 1.5.1 and Regenerate Thumbnails 2.2.4.

I looked at the post you mentioned http://thedogladysden.com/atozchallenge-s-is-for-santorini/ and I see the same header image there that appears on the home page at http://thedogladysden.com/ so I assume you are expecting to see a different image on the Santorini page. One possible explanation for the featured image not working on that page is if you uploaded the featured image while the layout was set to Content-Sidebar or Sidebar-Content at some point in the past and then changed the layout to Content-Sidebar-Sidebar at some point after that. The regenerate thumbnails plugin really should fix that issue.

I noticed you are currently using the WP Super Cache plugin, and I wonder if that’s causing any trouble or interference either with the regenerate thumbnail plugin or if maybe it’s even just a caching issue by itself.

Can you try clearing out the cache in WP Super Cache to see if that brings back the correct featured image headers on the old posts?

If that doesn’t help can you try redoing some of the troubleshooting steps one more time in a very specific order and including a step to make sure your server side cache (WP Super Cache) is cleared and turned off before the other steps?

    1. Clear server side cache (WP Super Cache)
    2. Disable the WP Super Cache plugin (temporarily for the purposes of this test)
    3. Go to Appearance > Theme Options make sure any layout other than Content-Sidebar or Sidebar-Content is activated
    4. Go to Tools > Regen. Thumbnails
    5. Click the “Regenerate All Thumbnails” button and wait for it to reach 100%, when it does, verify that there haven’t been any errors and that at least one of the featured image names has a “successfully resized” message next to it—example: https://cloudup.com/cVXMO-E2d9V
    6. Open http://thedogladysden.com/atozchallenge-s-is-for-santorini/ and check to see if the expected featured image header now appears

I’m not 100% sure caching is causing the trouble, but I think it’s worth testing it. It’s really the only other thing I could think of based on all the other information I found posted earlier in this thread.

If those more detailed troubleshooting steps don’t solve the issue for you, then I would recommend hiring a developer to audit the site because there must be something unrelated to the theme going on if these latest steps don’t fix the problems you’ve described.

Thank you for taking the time to help me, designsimply. I tried all of your suggestions, but they didn’t work. I thought maybe the custom css was the problem, but that wasn’t it either. Turns out, it is the Photon feature of Jetpack that caused the featured header images to disappear. Once I deactivated that, they returned.
Thanks to everyone who tried to help with this.
