When uploading a picture, I follow the standard procedure, select, open, add caption, etc. However when I click 'insert into post' the image will not appear, even if the caption does. I just get a blank space with a white square with a red cross in it in the top left corner. If anyone knows what to do to fix this I would very much appreciate it.
Check your uploads path in Settings -> Media.

Thank you for your reply. I have checked Settings -> Media but not being especially wordpress-literate, I don't know what it is that I am supposed to be looking for. Could you be more specific? Thank you.
What is the uploads path set to?

The only thing I can find that sounds similar to 'upload path' is 'Full URL path to files' and it is blank. The one above, 'Store uploads in this folder' says /home/harrysax/public_html/wp-content/uploads. Again, I don't really know what this means.
Remove /home/harrysax/public_html/wp-content/uploads. That field should be blank in 99% of sites.

I have just tried what you suggested, but I am afraid it did not work. When I tried to upload an image again the result was the same, no image, red cross.
Have you tried using ftp to check where the images are being uploaded to? They should be going into wp-content/uploads.

I found a box to the right of 'Store uploads in this folder' on the settings->media page which was blank, and filled it in with 'wp-content/uploads'. I don't know how much of a difference that makes as it says next to the box that that is the default setting anyway. I saved the changes and tried uploading again but the results were exactly the same. As for ftp, I am afraid that I do not know what that means.

What on earth for? Did you read what I posted earlier?

I have deleted what was in the 'Store uploads in this folder' box. It is now blank again. If it is required that I download some form of FTP-Client, then that would fall well beyond the limits of my level of computer-literacy. I don't know how relevent it is, but all the pictures in my media library have all turned into grey thumbnails with red crosses now as well.
In short, WordPress cannot find your uploaded images. You need something like FTP to first find where they are actually being uploaded to.

I do not think it would be possible for me to manage such a program as it appears to be too advanced for me to understand, leaving me with little choice but to accept defeat. Thank you for all your help anyway.
