phpbb create wp users

I have a basic site with a phpbb forum with lots of users. I want to convert my site to use wordpress, and give all forum users a wordpress login so that they can post to the blog. Do you know if this is possible, and if I need to create a new wp user for each forum user? I’d also like it so that if you are logged in with wp, then you are also logged into phpbb.
