I am trying to update a dormant WP blog that a client has decided to revive. It's running WordPress 2.7.

I want to get the site up and running, so ran a back up and tried the auto update

The update cannot be installed because WordPress 3.4.1 requires PHP version 5.2.4 or higher. You are running version 4.4.9.

Only problem, the hosting server is running PHP 5.2

    WTF????

Have you spoken to the hosts about this?

It's GoDaddy, they're pretty good with their server tech. If the control panel says it's PHP 5.2, I'm confident it is.

My suspicions is that WP 2.7 is reporting PHP 4.4.9 which may have been the version at the time of installation, but is unable to detect the updated PHP. Or the updater can't detect the current PHP version. Or something like that...

I suspect that means I'll have to install the WP update manually... but I fear it will be a tedious pain in the butt and break the site. And I am sure that My client is less than interested in paying for a pile of back end work that they are pretty clueless about.

WordPress 2.7.1 does not test for the PHP version. The updater does that. However, you should not upgrade to WP 3.4.1 in a single step as such a large upgrade may trash your database. You need to carry out a series of much smaller manual upgrades. See Upgrading_WordPress_Extended.

If you hit the same problem when you try to upgrade to WP 3.2, contact GoDaddy. It's almost certainly a server configuration issue.
