php scripts -- is this why my site was shut down? (3 posts)

    I have a small blog. Earlier today, my blog was shut down because of problems with a php script. When I look at my log, I see something on the order of 20,000 hits from one dns address. I normally get maybe 60 hits a day.

    My web host sent me the script that they say is causing the trouble. It is

    REQUEST_URI=/feed/ SCRIPT_NAME=/powweb-bin/php4 PATH_INFO=/index.php
    PATH_TRANSLATED=/www/e/v/evlogeite.com/htdocs/index.php php4

    I am completely clueless about all this. I am running wordpress, and know nothing about scripts or programming. My questions:

    1. If I need to delete it, where would I find this script to take it out?

    2. Is it related to the dns address in some fashion? I blocked the dns address earlier (the same thing happened several weeks ago), but it seems to be back.

    I know this may not be a wordpr3ess problem at all, but I simply don't know where to try to locate it.

    Thanks!

    20 000 hits from a single IP sounds like someone is trying to run a denial of service attack on you. Obviously it worked. Your web host, however, seems to have made a mistake in blaming you for the attack. Block the IP address in .htaccess, and put your site back up.

    Nothing needs to be deleted.

    You should also immediately begin shopping around for a new host, because your current one doesn't seem to be savvy enough to recognize the difference between a malfunctioning PHP script and an attack.

    That, or they have withheld information from you, and that would be even worse.

    Feel free to copy this reply to your web host.

    Thank you. I will pass that on to them, and see what they say. Now I just have to figure out how I made someone so mad.
