PHP lines and paragraph tags

Having a problem. When I put the <?php the_content(); ?> in, it automatically places a < p > tag infront so it makes a new paragraph. The same thing happens with the <?php wp_link_pages(); ?>. I want it to just skip one line, like in a <br> tag or have it not go on to a separate line at all. Any help would be definately appreciated since I don’t really know what I’m doing.
