Site?
Also try saving the photos in different formats and at different resolutions and see if it makes any difference.
Downsizing images from jpeg to jpeg to jpeg looses data at every step of the way.
Even this, which was the original as far as wp was concerned, was previously downsized. http://www.mypencildrawings.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/La-Cote-32.jpg
For sites dealing with commercial images, doing the sizing with a program like photoshop and ftping them to an image folder would, in my opinion, have better results.

Many thanks for your quick replies – I shall try your suggestions.
Further help please.
All of the photos shown on the site have been sent from Picassa, where they all appear ‘acceptably’ sharp.
They were not all taken using the same resolution etc but all appear equally fuzzy. I have used the Landscape theme’s default image size.
It is the transferring to the site that messes things up – this is what I cannot understand.
As mentioned by kmessinger, WordPress will downsize the images when you upload them. Try working with another program and FTPing them to an image folder, then link to them from there.
If you want to continue using the WordPress upload feature, increase your upload_max_filesize and your post_max_size in your php.ini, and then still expect results of slightly less quality.
