I am starting a new wordpress photo site and have all my photos with a certain code. date-band name-number do I need to create a seperate database or is the media gallery a seperate database?
Because my site is going to have 10,000 or more photos.

The media gallery is not a separate db, but it's a table (two actually) within the DB.
You should be just fine, really, with 10k photos and the database.
Speed issues will be more with how long it takes to serve up the files and possible caching. You may want to look into WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache.
