A little confused here. I am trying to set up permissions = who can write, edit, etc. At present anyone can comment and anyone who registers can write a post. Registered writes are labeled "contributors." All posts created by contributors must have admin or editor approval before going publis. My question is, how does the contributor status publish their post, there is no publish button.

Posted 5 years ago #i read the codex and maybe there is a problem when considering the function of my site = let anyone who is registered write a post which would then go to a moderator. i only want admin and an editor free reign on what goes public.
at present the author can write and it immediately goes public - that won't work as these newly registered "posters" can be total strangers. and the contributor can write but how does the contributor get it to the moderator to make it public - anyway, as is, contributor does not work if their effort can't get to a moderator.
i probably need a plugin?

Posted 5 years ago #If I understand correctly, you're trying to do exactly what wordpress is designed to do, i.e. no plugin necessary. There isn't a "publish" button because contributors are not allowed to publish, only to save--it's up to the editor/admin to publish.

Posted 5 years ago #adam, how does a anyone, who can write but cannot "publish", get his post to a moderator for approval? example. you come across a site that you wish to initiate your own post. not a comment to an existing post, but an original post. this site wants you to register and your orignal to be approved by a moderator.
maybe i am not understanding you. at present, wordpress does provide for this particular requirement. right?
an author can but an author bypasses the moderator. how does one allow all original posts to easily come across the moderator's desk? or can we configure wordpress so the author's post goes to moderator?
btw- admin/editor/author can publish. author can't edit other author's posts.

Posted 5 years ago #Maybe I'm misunderstanding you. Here's how it usually works in a situation like this. If you could point out what you would like to be different, I might be able to help.
Bob is registered and has user level of "contributor." Bob logs in and writes a post called "Hi, I'm a contributor." He can't click "publish," because that would cause his post to appear immediately. Instead, he clicks "save."
Ron is an editor or admin. He logs on and clicks on "Manage." Right at the top, he sees a big box that says "Others' drafts: Hi, I'm a contributor." Ron clicks on this, decides whether to approve it, then clicks "publish." The post shows up on the blog under Bob's name.
All this is built-in functionality. What exactly are you trying to do differently?

Posted 5 years ago #Adam, everyone, I just reread my convoluted diatribe above. Let me put it another way.
Let's forget that we are familiar with WordPress. I am addressing those people who do not know WordPress but probably can write emails. What should I do to make it easy to write a post that automatically notifies the moderator so this post gets published within a reasonable timeframe? And, we don't want this person to be able to edit anything other than their own post. Right now it is not apparent to me that WordPress as concurrently configured can accomplish this and that only a plugin can do it. Any direction here? Thanks. Yipes, this post does not sound any better. Brain cramp. Sorry.

Posted 5 years ago #It sounds like the only thing you want that isn't already built in is something like this: When a contributor writes a post, you want an email to go to an admin notifying them to moderate it. That would probably require a plugin, yes.
But it sounds like everything else you want to do is in place, as you may have gathered from my last comment.
As for the plugin, you'll need to look to see if one exists, and if not, you'll probably need to write that yourself.
But if it's something else you want, I'm completely lost and probably can't help you.

Posted 5 years ago #a feature in addition to the email to the moderator and MORE important! a system that is more dynamic, that handholds the new end user through the process. it is not intuitive as is.
i might have to write concise submissions instructions somewhere else? FAQ's, etc. anyway, thanks so much so far! writing this all out organizes ones thoughts and maybe someone on our forum can point me to something as this seems like a pretty typical feature. again, thanks!

Posted 5 years ago #I had the same question as ronchicago about notifying editors/moderators of Contributor posts ready for moderation.
This plugin I came across, notifiy-on-draft-post might do the trick. Although I haven't tried it out myself yet, it sounds like what you were looking for...
