After a new install the site is up and running, however I cannot edit the sidebar template, etc from the wordpress control panel. There is a meesage on the bottom that states 'if this file was writible... etc'

I have permissions maxed on every file and I still cant edit from wp. Any idea what I need to do?

    thanks.

You and WP may not be looking at the same file.
Where is your site and / what theme are you using ?
    Who is your host ?

    Apologies if you've done this..

That file you have changed it's permissions to at least 666 by ftp ? Or cpanel ? How do you know it has changed permissions ?

Presentation > Theme Editor - the file you first see should be the one above.

Change the name of the default folder.
    Rename it to 'cat'
Now go to your blog and press ctrl and f5

If the blog stays the same, something funky is happening.
If the blog changes to no formatting, something equally funky but different is happening.
