Permissions During Installation

Okay, I’ve been having nothing but trouble getting a new 1.5 installation done. I’ve gotten 404 errors, “permission denied” errors, .htaccess cannot be found errors, etc.

The closest I’ve come to completing the installation actually yielded an index page, but upon clicking on the comment, I got another 404 page. I’m a bit frustrated and I’ve run out of cuss words to mumble.

Can anyone provide a master list saying which files and directories should have which permissions? How should I configure this? The installation directions are clear, but I feel as though that is the one area where a bit of clarity would really make a world of difference.
