   How do i set a page as the first thing seen when someone enters site?

   Meaning a static home page rather than your blog? It's available within WP itself now - make sure you're on the latest version (2.8.2).

   Goto Settings>Reading and you can set one of your static pages as the front page.

   Log into your Dashboard.

   Go to Settings | Reading; choose from the "Front page displays" options "A static page" ...

   ... that should get you to the right place.
