• I’m new to Word Press and I don’t know anythign about code. I have two websites with Word Press. On one I got the peramlinks to work by changing to the custom button and entering %category%/%pagename% which is the code a friend gave me. On that one, the permalinks work great, but when I try the same thing on my other site using the same code, it will only display the home page. All the other pages get a 404 error message. So on that site, the only way I can display all my pages is if I have the permalinks set on default. I don’t understand it since I am using the same version of Word Press on both sites, both sites are on the same host server, and I pretty much did every thing identically on both sites. I could really use some help, please remember I am a real techno dummy. Thanks. Pepper

  • What is your site and what do you want the permalinks to do that they’re not doing?

I’d like to be able to rename the permalinks so the links don’t have numbers but names. But when I click on the custom permalinks button, and put in the code that my friend gave me %category%/%pagename% the site will only display the home page. If I try to go to another page on the site I get the error 404 message that says the page can’t be displayed. I double checked the code I put in and it is the same one I used on my other site. And it works perfectly there.

Try resetting your custom permalinks back to the default setting. If this works, then review Using_Permalinks (which is a slightly more reliable source) before setting a custom permalink structure back up again.

Also check with your host that mod_rewrite is running on your server.
