Permalinks suddenly defaulted to default structure – then returned?

    Hi,

    Our permalinks were pretty but they suddenly defaulted to the default setting with a question mark and a number.

    The permalinks settings page didn’t have the custom setting remembered.

    After a while they came back, both as an option on the settings page and displayed in the browser.

    Why would this happen?

    Is there anything I can do to stop it happening again?
