Permalinks don't work except default (7 posts)

So anytime I turn the permalinks to anything but default it breaks the site. I thought maybe it wasn't able to write to the htaccess file so I modified it manually and still nothing. Any other ideas? Is there a specific PHP setting that needs to be enabled?

You are on an apache (linux) server?

Is mod-rewrite enabled on the server?

How does it fail? 404 errors? Links just don't work?

Yeah there are 404's. I will check on the mod-rewrite.

Does the .htaccess file actually get generated at all?

If not, perhaps a permissions issue?

Checked the permissions and like I said, I even created the htaccess by hand and inserted the proper code. Still nothing.
